About the Course


As part of the EMT (formerly ICO) recruitment process with the National Ambulance Service, HART EMS is offering anyone looking to apply the chance to prepare for the clinical assessments required as part of the entry process.

This 1 day course is designed to improve patient assessment skills, refresh BLS, widen knowledge around assisting Advanced Paramedics in emergency situations and some tips at excelling at interviews.

Proof of EMT registration is a requirement and you will receive a certificate and 4 CPC points.

Course Content:

Basic Airway management techniques –

  • Head tilt chin lifting

  • Trauma jaw trusts

Breathing assessments and values –

  • SPO2 – normal ranges, Hypoxia

  • ETCO2 – normal ranges,  Acidosis

  • Auscultation with stethoscope  - Lung/breathing sounds

Circulatory status evaluation –

  • Electro Cardio Gram (ECG) – Lead placements and common errors

  • Heart Rate (HR) – heart rate ranges,  palpation techniques

  • Blood Pressure (BP) – Ranges, Values, Hyper/Hypotension, palpation / Auscultation of BP

  • Temperature (Temp) – Normal ranges, Pyrexia values, Hyper / Hypo Thermia

  • Blood Monitoring Sugars (BM) – Glucose and Ketone values, acidosis, Diabetic emergency recognition

Disability / Cognitive / Pain assessments –

  • Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)

  • Alert Voice Pain Unresponsive (AVPU)

  • Wong-Baker

  • National Early Warning Scores (NEWS2)

  • Assessment of injuries and illness

  • Basic Life Support
